What is CBD Oil?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical found in the cannabis Sativa plant. CBD oil is directly extracted from the cannabis Sativa plant through CO2 extraction that is mixed with a carrier oil like MCT oil (coconut-based) or hemp seed oil. The cannabis Sativa plant has many chemical compounds including tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the compound responsible for the psychoactive effects. CBD however does not have any psychoactive effects, instead it retains all the beneficial properties of the plant. CBD in the form of oil is by far the most popular way that CBD can be used or consumed. However, CBD has expanded and can also be found in the form of topicals, capsules, and edibles (ex. gummies).

Types of CBD oils

There are three types of CBD oils to choose from: broad-spectrum, full-spectrum, and isolate. Each referring to a chemical compound found in each type.

Broad-Spectrum CBD

Broad-spectrum CBD is perhaps the most popular choice out of the three types of CBD. Broad-Spectrum CBD is completely free of THC and does not contains components of the cannabis plant like cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids.

Full-spectrum CBD

Full-spectrum CBD contains cannabinoids, terpenes, fatty acids, and THC. The extraction and filtering process extracts the CBD from the plant but does not filter out any of its compounds. It is also worth noting that full-spectrum CBD can contain up to 0.3% THC but is not enough to cause any effects produced by high potency THC.

CBD Isolate

Unlike broad-spectrum and full-spectrum CBD, CBD isolate is the purest form of CBD. That being said it does not contain any cannabinoids, terpenes, or fatty acids from the plant. The great thing about CBD isolate is that it is the typically the most affordable option because it doesn't contain THC or cannabis plant compounds.

How to use

CBD oil can be taken orally on its own or can be added to foods/drinks. CBD oil can also be applied topically depending on the carrier oil. It is important to keep in mind that the oils take about 1 to 2 hours to take effect.
